How to put your job board on the shop TV
Why a TV on the shop wall beats a whiteboard and a screen at the desk, what it should show (and what it should not), and how to set one up with Carvikon in a few minutes.
A TV on the shop wall is the cheapest way to make a job board part of the day. Nobody has to open anything: the crew glances up, the writer glances over, and the board is the thing everyone talks about at the morning meeting.
Why a TV and not just the office screen
A board that lives on the office computer gets checked by the office. The floor keeps its own picture in their heads, or on a whiteboard, and the two drift apart. A TV puts the same live picture where the work happens, so the board stays true because everyone is looking at it.
What the TV should show
- Every car as a card, in the column for its stage.
- The year, make and model, so a tech recognises the car without reading a repair order number.
- What it is waiting on, if it is waiting.
- Nothing private. Customer names, phone numbers and prices do not belong on a screen in a shop where customers walk past.
What you need
Any TV with a web browser, or a TV with a small computer or streaming device plugged into it that can open a web page. Put it where the whiteboard hangs now, at eye height, readable from the bays.
Setting it up in Carvikon
- On the TV's browser, open carvikon.com/pair. It shows a short code and a QR code.
- Scan the QR code with your phone, signed in as the owner or a manager. Or open the board on any device, choose Show on TV and type the code.
- Pick the board, name the TV and confirm. The TV opens the live board by itself within seconds and updates whenever anyone moves a car.
Nobody signs in on the TV, and it shows each vehicle's year, make, model and stage without customer names or prices. You can pair more than one TV, one per bay area if you like, and the board is the same on all of them.
Make it part of the morning
Run the morning meeting in front of the TV. Start with the cars that have been in one stage too long, then the ones promised today. When the meeting runs off the board, the board gets kept up to date, because everyone saw what happens when it is not.
Cost
The shop TV comes with every Carvikon plan, from $49 a month for one shop, with up to 5 users on Starter, 25 on Pro and no user limit on Elite.
